In Les Chants de Maldoror, Isadore Ducasse describes a youth “as beautiful as the chance meeting on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella.” A similar sense of Surrealist dislocation inspires the Gebrauchskunst of California designer Micah Heimlich. On the whole, he makes casts of natural objects (such as sea sponges, found wood, fossils) and combines them with various industrial materials, minerals, and gemstones, creating otherworldly shapes and textures. This results in hybrids that oscillate between fine art and functional design. His recent Sea Sponge Series is no exception. Part homage to Yves Klein and Jean Dubuffet, these light sculptures are also animist totems that dazzle the eye and inspire reverie. Like the Surrealist maxim, the work could be described as the chance meeting of a meteor and a marine creature in madam’s boudoir.
